We teach our children critical thinking, social grace, and courtesy. Maria Montessori was an Italian physician, educator, and innovator. She opened the first Montessori school “The Casa dei Bambini” (The children’s house) in Rome on January 6th, 1907. She was nominated three times for the Nobel Peace prize.
MONTESSORI MIXED AGE GROUPS
Multi-age grouping is fundamental in all authentic Montessori classrooms. Dr. Maria Montessori observed that children learn best in a mixed age classroom. The mixed classrooms encourage kids to build strong bonds with others not of their own age, children help one another and teach one another. It comes naturally to them.
INDEPENDENCE AND FREEDOM
Children are to have the freedom to make choices regarding their work choices and timing. The development of independence is seen as an important value in Montessori education. Children may freely move around the classroom to make their work choice. They have the freedom of Choice.
RESPECT
The Montessori Method is based on a profound respect for humanity and human beings in all stages of development. Montessori taught us to deeply respect children, not interrupting when they are concentrating, allowing them to discover their own mistakes rather than pointing them out, observing without judgment. Teaching kindness, soft hands, listening to them, giving them positive feedback, this does not mean that the adult is not in charge. The directress will set limits when needed in a respectfully assertive way.
